Protea
As cut flowers Protea will last a long time without any special preparation to the water, often 7 days or more. For the best results, trim about 1.5 inches off the end of the stems every few days when changing the water.
Many variety of Protea dry well, their learthy leaves and large blooms holding color for several months. When fully dried many of the larger varieties can be used in handicrafts.
There are many types of Protea that grow in Hawaii, here are a few varieties. Please refer to the flower availability chart for more information on availability.
Protea General Information:
First a little history....
The family Proteaceae was named after its type genus, called Protea. Protea is a South African genus known for its large and showy flowers.
In 1735 Carl Linneaus first mentioned the name, Protea, in referring to the small South African genus now known as Leucadendron. The name was again referred to by Robert Brown in 1809 in a thesis called 'On the Natural Order of Plants called Proteaceae'.
Features of the Protea....
The most abundant members of the Proteaceae family are trees or woody shrubs, indeed, in Hawaii one of our major agricultural products, Macadamia Nuts, is from a Proteaceae. Leaves are usually tough and thick (leathery) and very hardy, usually arranged alternately or scattered. Flowers usually have male and female parts.
The live Proteaceae tend to occupy tropical and subtropical climates, usually growing best in infertile, sandy, acidic, well drained soils.
As live plants in Hawaii, Protea do best in tropical conditions with slight elevation where night temperatures are no lower than 50 degrees with day temperatures of 60 degrees or higher. They like being planted in sandy well drained soil made up of course sand, gravel, with some clay. Protea generally like full sun and well circulated air.
